Nuclear Utility Meteorological data Users Group (NUMUG)

This group provides a forum for exchanging ideas and sharing information among those involved in collecting and utilizing meteorological data at nuclear facilities.  Members include scientists, engineers, technicians, and managers with commercial nuclear power plants; the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and international agencies; the Department of Energy and its contractors;  other federal, state, and local organizations; academia; and meteorological instrumentation and software developers and vendors.

NUMUG shares information with its members through regularly scheduled teleconferences, listserve emails, a conference that it hosts roughly every other year, and website postings. This website provides information about the NUMUG, organizational news and meeting announcements, archives of past meetings, key publications, contact information, and links to other sources of information.

Stability issues with the website appear to have been resolved.

Following the last NUMUG meeting, some folks created some software that resulted in hundreds of thousands of registrations. These caused stability issues with the site. Since then, the site was upgraded and then re-built from a previous version. Additional registration security measures were created by Google and incorporated. Following a month of testing, the site appears to be stable and efforts are now going to be made to re-build the meeting registration pages and upload the last two meeting presentations. Thanks for your patience.

2014 Meeting

The 16th NUMUG Meeting was held in Savannah, Georgia in June, 2014. As information is received for the next meeting, the dates and details will be published and the registration process developed.

Listserver Database

If you log into this website, you will find a link to the historical email discussions of the NUMUG listserver.  You can search the file using normal web search tools.  The steering committee will be discussing the option of creating a Forum or Blog and converting the file to fit those formats. Suggestions to the Steering Committee are encouraged.

News from NRC

On October 13th, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) published Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.221, “Design-Basis Hurricane and Hurricane Missiles for Nuclear Power Plants.”  This guide describes a method that the NRC staff considers acceptable for selecting the design-basis hurricane wind speed and hurricane-generated missiles that a new nuclear power plant should be designed to withstand to prevent undue risk to public health and safety.  This supports reviews of applications that the agency expects to receive for new nuclear reactor construction permits or operating licenses under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50, “Domestic Licensing of Production and Utilization Facilities” (10 CFR Part 50); design certifications under 10 CFR Part 52, “Licenses, Certifications, and Approvals for Nuclear Power Plants;” and combined licenses under 10 CFR Part 52 that do not reference a standard design.  Regulatory Guide 1.221 is available on the NRC website at
